A Mind, Body, and Spirit Practice, to many, yoga is just advanced stretching, but there is more to this ancient practice than just the stretch or poses.

Derived from the Sanskrit word “yuji,” meaning union, yoga is an ancient practice that brings together mind, body, and spirit.

Yoga incorporates breathing exercises, meditation, stretching, posture work, and poses designed to encourage relaxation, reduce stress, build lean muscle, help with recovery, and much more. Yoga is a great practice that is low-impact and has lots of variations, so all ages, levels, and bodies are encouraged to part-take to feel all the benefits. Check out the ten most common types of yoga to see which styles might work best for you.

Hatha

Hatha is perhaps the most beginner friendly style of Yoga. A traditional Hatha session might incorporate breathing, meditation, and basic postures.

Vinyasa

Vinyasa flow sessions incorporate more movement than Hatha, and will test your body’s endurance.

Ashtanga

Ashtanga yoga will be physically demanding, with an 8 part practice. If you aim for perfection in your practice, try Ashtanga!

There are proven benefits of yoga. Yoga receives constant praise from those who practice (yogis), the media, and celebrities, so one might ask, “how great is yoga for me?” Here are a few but powerful benefits of yoga that are backed by clinical studies1,2,3

Decrease Stress and Anxiety:

Multiple studies have shown practicing yoga a couple of times a week can decrease the secretion of cortisol, the primary stress hormone. Yoga also emphasizes the importance of being present in the moment and finding a sense of peace, which could help treat anxiety. Additionally, the breathwork in yoga can be used to help alleviate stress at any given time, not just during your yoga practice

Increased Quality of Life:

Yoga is becoming increasingly popular as a means of therapy to improve the quality of life for many individuals. Studies have shown that yoga may help improve sleep quality, enhance spiritual well-being, improve social function and boost one’s mood

Reduce Inflammation:

Inflammation is a normal immune response, but chronic inflammation can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. By adding yoga into your daily routine, you can lower your inflammatory markers and reduce your risk of chronic illness

Our patients love yoga; not only are the benefits above proven by science, but they are also strengthened by our patients who rave about how they feel post-yoga. Check out this raving review from our patient Natasha.

I do hot yoga at a local studio 3-5 times a week. It not only helps me mentally take a break from the daily grind but also physically! Yoga has been proven to improve and balance my hormones and has a positive impact on my insulin/blood sugar levels, which has been really great as I balance the right blend of how I treat my daily PCOS symptoms with medications, diet, and exercise.
