What is Acid Reflux?
Acid Reflux is a painful sensation that occurs when contents from your stomach move up into your esophagus. It’s also called acid regurgitation or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Acid reflux can cause an uncomfortable burning feeling in your chest that can reach up to the neck. This feeling is commonly known as heartburn. In some cases, GERD can cause difficulty swallowing, or lead to breathing complications like a chronic cough or asthma.
The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a circular band of muscle at the end of your esophagus that relaxes and opens when you swallow, and tightens and closes afterward. Acid Reflux occurs when your LES doesn't close or tighten as it should, allowing for stomach acid and other contents to rise into your esophagus, causing the burning sensation. There are many OTC (over-the-counter) medications such as TUMS or Alka-Seltzer, but if you suffer from chronic Acid Reflux/GERD, prescription medication might be necessary to alleviate your symptoms.
